The Mike Eldred Trio’s album 61/49, at the blues crossroad with other strains of American roots music, is a fine new addition to the Rip Cat catalog. First issued on another label in 2011, this studio effort with guitarist-singer Eldred supported by bassist John Bazz and drummer Jerry Angel (The Blasters’ rhythm section) has already made its mark. The Los Angeles Times called it one of the Ten Best Albums of 2011, and, among other press raves, Downbeat Magazine gave it an enthusiastic three-and-a-half-star review.
Blues radio will continue to support the album. Acclaimed musicians who have hailed their music include John Mayer, Billy F. Gibbons, Brian Setzer, Robert Cray, Lee Rocker, Dave Alvin, and the members of Los Lobos. Honest, unvarnished music like the trio’s will surely expand their popularity beyond their home turf in Southern California.
